The single most important change this year is procedural rather than academic. Registration through DigiLocker is mandatory for all Indian nationals, which means your application depends on a verified DigiLocker account being ready before you begin.

• Create or log in to your DigiLocker account now, not on the day you apply.
• Check that your name and date of birth match your qualifying-degree records exactly — a mismatch is the usual reason verification fails.
• Make sure your mobile number and Aadhaar linkage are current, because that is how the account is verified.

Leaving this to the final week of September is how avoidable rejections happen. The application window is five weeks long; the DigiLocker check takes minutes if nothing is wrong and days if something is.

What else has changed for GATE 2027

• A new paper. Robotics and Automation (RA) has been introduced as a new test paper.
• Revised syllabi. The GATE 2027 syllabi have been revised. The changes announced include the Biotechnology and Textile Engineering & Fibre Science papers, along with changes to the XE, XH and XL sectional codes.

What Chemistry students should do this week

1. Set up and verify DigiLocker today or tomorrow, before the window opens.
2. Keep a scanned photograph, signature, category certificate and degree certificate ready in the specified formats.
3. Decide your paper code — most chemistry postgraduates apply for CY, but check whether XL suits your specialisation better.
4. Download the official GATE 2027 syllabus for that paper and mark what is new to you.
5. Apply in the first fortnight. The portal is slowest in the closing days, and applying early leaves room to correct a mistake.
