What kind of paper this is
CUET-PG is an admission test for postgraduate programmes at participating central and other universities. For chemistry candidates that makes it a route into an MSc, and it sits alongside IIT-JAM as one of the two main postgraduate entry points for BSc graduates.
The character of the paper matters more than any list of topics. CUET-PG Chemistry asks a large number of questions across the breadth of the undergraduate syllabus within a limited time. That single fact should shape the whole preparation, because it means the paper rewards a different skill from the one most candidates train.
Breadth versus depth: the strategic decision
The most common mistake is preparing for CUET-PG the way one prepares for GATE or CSIR-NET Part C — going deep into fewer topics and drilling long multi-step problems. That approach suits a paper with fewer, harder questions. It suits this one poorly.

- Physical chemistry — thermodynamics, chemical and ionic equilibrium, kinetics, electrochemistry, surface chemistry, basic quantum chemistry and spectroscopy fundamentals.
- Inorganic chemistry — periodicity, chemical bonding, coordination compounds, main group and transition element chemistry, organometallics and bioinorganic basics.
- Organic chemistry — reaction mechanisms, stereochemistry, functional group chemistry, named reactions, and the standard spectroscopic identification methods.
Check every heading against the current official syllabus for your session before finalising a plan, since the scope is defined by the conducting body.
A preparation plan that fits the paper
- Coverage first, depth second. Complete a full pass over the syllabus before going deep anywhere. An early complete pass tells you where you actually stand; a deep dive into one branch tells you nothing about the other two.
- Short-format practice. Practise in sets of twenty-five to thirty questions against the clock, rather than working through a handful of long problems. The skill being trained is recognition speed.
- One-page summaries per topic. In a recall-heavy paper, a compressed page you wrote yourself is worth far more than a chapter you read. Make them revisable in minutes, not hours.
- Weekly full-length mocks from early on. Time pressure is the defining feature of this paper, and it cannot be simulated by untimed practice.
- An error log with three columns — concept, calculation, selection. After a month the proportions across those columns are a better study plan than any generic schedule.
Speed is a trainable skill
Candidates often treat their working speed as fixed. It is not. Most of the gain comes from three unglamorous habits: recognising the question type within a few seconds, doing routine arithmetic without a calculator, and abandoning a question quickly when the route is not visible. All three improve measurably with deliberate practice, and all three matter more in this paper than in any of the alternatives.
Give yourself an explicit rule during practice — if you cannot see the approach within roughly thirty seconds, mark it and move on. Return only if time remains at the end. Candidates who train this consistently see their scores rise without their subject knowledge changing at all.
For Hindi-medium graduates
A large share of candidates come from Hindi-medium colleges and worry that the language of the paper will disadvantage them. In practice the technical vocabulary of chemistry is a bounded set of terms, learnable in weeks, and identical in substance across both languages. What actually separates candidates is coverage and speed. A realistic final month
Stop adding new material after the first week of the final month. Work only from your own summaries, your error log and full-length mocks. Taper the mocks in the last few days so that you arrive rested.

Is selective study a good idea for CUET-PG?
