Class 12 Chemistry: How to Write Answers That Actually Score in the Board Exam
Knowing the chemistry and writing an answer that earns full marks are two different skills. The second one is learnable in a fortnight.
The gap between knowing and scoring
The most frustrating conversation a chemistry teacher has is the one after results, with a student who genuinely knew the subject and did not get the marks. Nothing was forgotten. The answers were simply written in a way that did not let the examiner award what was there.
This is worth taking seriously precisely because it is the easiest thing to fix. Learning a chapter takes weeks. Learning to present an answer takes a fortnight of deliberate practice, and it applies to every chapter at once.
Match the answer to the marks
The mark allocation is an instruction about length and structure, not a suggestion. Writing three paragraphs for a one-mark question wastes time you will need later; writing one line for a five-mark question leaves marks unclaimed.

When a question says “why”, the reason must appear
This is the single most common way marks are lost in chemistry. A question asking why sucrose is non-reducing is not asking you to state that it is non-reducing. It is asking for the cause — that both anomeric carbons are involved in the glycosidic linkage, leaving no free aldehyde or ketone group.
Train the habit with a simple structure: state the fact, then write “because”, then give the structural or energetic reason. Answers of that shape score fully. Answers that restate the question in different words do not, however correct they are.
Reaction equations: conditions belong above the arrow
In organic chemistry a reaction written without its conditions is an incomplete answer, and conditions frequently carry their own mark.
- Write the reagent above the arrow and the solvent, temperature or catalyst below it.
- Balance the equation. An unbalanced equation is marked as an unbalanced equation.
- Where a mechanism is asked for, show the arrows, the intermediate and the product — not just reactants and product.
- Where a conversion is asked for, show every step. A two-step conversion written as one arrow loses the intermediate mark.
Numericals: the marks are in the working
A correct final number with no working scores poorly, and a wrong final number with correct working often scores well. That asymmetry should decide how you write.
- Write the formula first, before substituting anything. It is usually worth a mark on its own.
- Substitute with units. Carrying units through catches errors and is expected.
- Show the intermediate steps. Do not do three operations mentally and write only the result.
- State the final answer with its unit, and underline it. An answer without a unit is incomplete.
- Sanity-check the magnitude. If a molar mass comes out negative or an equilibrium constant comes out impossibly large, say so and note it rather than leaving it silently.
Diagrams, structures and tables
Draw diagrams in pencil, label them, and keep them large enough to read. In organic chemistry, structures must be unambiguous — a carelessly drawn ring or a bond that could be read two ways will be marked as written, not as intended. Where a question asks for a comparison, a small table is usually clearer and faster than prose, and examiners have no objection to it.
Time management in the hall
- Use the reading time to mark the questions you are most confident about. Start there.
- Roughly one and a half minutes per mark is a reasonable working guide; adjust once, early, if you are running behind.
- Leave the question you cannot see a route into, and return to it. Sitting with it costs the questions you could have answered.
- Attempt everything. There is no negative marking, so a blank space is a guaranteed zero while a reasoned attempt is not.
- Keep the last ten minutes for checking units, balancing equations and confirming that every part of every multi-part question was actually answered.
A fortnight of practice that changes the outcome
- Days 1–4: answer twenty short questions from past papers, strictly to length. One line for one mark. No more.
- Days 5–8: ten “why” questions, each answered as fact–because–reason. Check that a reason genuinely appears in every one.
- Days 9–11: fifteen numericals, written out fully with formula, units and underlined answer.
- Days 12–14: two full papers under timed conditions, then mark them yourself against the marking scheme rather than against your own memory of what you meant.
That last instruction matters most. Marking your own paper honestly — awarding nothing for a point you intended but did not write — is uncomfortable and is the fastest way to see the gap between knowing and scoring. Most students find it worth several marks on its own.

Does a correct answer with no working get full marks in a numerical?
Usually not. Marks in numericals are distributed across the formula, the substitution and the final answer with its unit. Writing only the final number forfeits most of them, while correct working with an arithmetic slip at the end often still scores well.
Should I attempt a question I am unsure about?
Yes. There is no negative marking in the board exam, so an unattempted question is a certain zero while a reasoned attempt may earn partial credit. Write what you do know, structured clearly, rather than leaving the space blank.
How long should a five-mark answer be?
Long enough to make every point the question asks for, and no longer. Most five-mark questions have identifiable parts — answer each one separately and visibly, rather than writing continuous prose and hoping the examiner finds the points inside it.
Do I need to write reaction conditions every time?
