How to Choose a Chemistry Tutor for Class 11 and 12

The questions that separate a tutor who will move your child’s marks from one who will simply cover the syllabus again, more slowly.

In short: Chemistry is three subjects under one name, and the single most useful question you can ask a prospective tutor is which of the three your child is actually weak in. A tutor who answers that before teaching anything has understood the problem. One who starts at the current chapter has not.

1. Do they diagnose, or do they just start?

“Weak in Chemistry” is almost never true as stated. Physical Chemistry behaves like Physics and needs worked numericals. Organic behaves like a language and needs mechanism. Inorganic needs organised recall. A student is usually comfortable in one, coping in another and lost in the third — and teaching all three the same way is the most common reason tuition produces no change. A first session that establishes which branch is failing is worth more than three sessions of general revision.

2. Do they know which board and which edition?

NCERT has been revising textbooks across recent sessions, so two students in the same class can hold different editions. A tutor teaching from the syllabus they remember rather than the book your child was issued will drift, usually in exactly the chapters where the revision happened. Asking “which edition is my child using?” is a fair and revealing question.

Ask thisA good answer sounds likeA weak answer sounds like
Which branch is my child weak in?I will find out in the first session and tell youAll of them, we will start from Chapter 1
How do you teach Organic?Through mechanism, so reactions generalisePractice, students must memorise reactions
How will I know it is working?Written tests before the school’s, and I will tell you when progress is slowThe marks will improve
Will it be the same tutor each week?Yes, and here is what happens if I am unavailableWe will assign someone from the team

3. Does the student work, or watch?

Watching a solution produces a strong feeling of understanding that disappears at the blank page. In a good session the student attempts while the tutor watches, because the error has to be caught where it is made. If the tutor talks for the full hour and the child listens, you will discover what the child cannot do when the next school test does it for you.

The Class 11 warning worth acting on: most students who struggle in Class 12 Chemistry were already struggling from around October of Class 11. Class 12 assumes the mole concept and basic organic mechanism are secure and builds directly on both. A gap found in Class 11 is a small job; the same gap found in Class 12 competes with board revision for time that no longer exists.

4. Practicals are marks too

Salt analysis, titration and the record file carry internal assessment marks that are among the easiest to secure and the most casually lost. Ask whether the tutor covers practical work and viva preparation, or only theory. A file assembled the week before submission reads like it, and viva questions come from experiments performed months earlier.

5. Be careful with a fee quoted too early

Fees depend on class, subject count, frequency and mode. A rate offered before anyone has asked what your child needs is a rate for a service nobody has defined yet. Equally, a quote that cannot be explained in terms of those four things is worth questioning.

FAQs

Is one-to-one better than coaching for Chemistry?

It depends on the problem. A student with specific gaps in one branch benefits most from one-to-one, because the time goes entirely to that gap. A student who is broadly on track but needs pace and peer benchmarking often does well in a batch. The honest answer requires knowing which of the two your child is.

How many sessions a week does Class 12 Chemistry need?

It depends on whether you are repairing gaps or maintaining progress, and on how many other subjects are being supported. Anyone who answers this without asking those things is guessing.

Can Chemistry be taught online?

Theory, numericals, mechanisms and equation practice all work well on a shared whiteboard. Practical technique is better handled at school or in a centre with apparatus.

My child says they understand in class but cannot solve alone. What does that mean?

It almost always means the sessions are demonstration rather than practice. Following a worked example creates a convincing sense of understanding that does not survive an unfamiliar question. The fix is for the student to attempt under observation.
