How to Revise Chemistry So It Actually Stays
Rereading feels productive and is close to useless. The methods that work feel harder, which is exactly why they work.

Why rereading fails
Rereading a chapter produces a strong feeling of familiarity, and that feeling is easily mistaken for knowledge. The test is different: in an exam the material is not in front of you, so what matters is whether you can produce it, not whether you recognise it.
Retrieval practice
After studying a topic, put the material away and write down everything you can recall. Then check, and mark specifically what was missing rather than simply rereading the whole thing.
The gaps found this way are precise, whereas rereading spreads effort evenly over material you already know and material you do not. That precision is what makes the method efficient despite feeling slower.
Spacing
Revisit each topic at increasing intervals — roughly a day after first study, then a week, then a month, then before the exam. Each revisit takes less time than the last, and the total time spent is far lower than repeated cramming while the retention is far higher.
The practical obstacle is that spacing requires planning, whereas cramming does not. Keeping a simple list of topics with the date last revised is enough infrastructure to make it work.
Treat the three kinds of chemistry content differently

The third row deserves emphasis. Descriptive chemistry looks like arbitrary lists, but almost all of it follows from a few causes — size, electronegativity, charge density, shielding. Organising notes by those causes turns memorisation into reasoning, and reasoning survives exam pressure far better.
Organic chemistry specifically
Building a reaction map is worth the effort: a single sheet showing each functional group and the reagents converting it to every other one. Once built, revision consists of covering parts of it and reproducing them.
Mechanisms should be written out with curly arrows rather than read. Reading a mechanism is recognition; drawing it is retrieval, and the difference in what sticks is substantial.
What to do with mistakes
Keep an error log recording, for each wrong answer, the reason it was wrong — concept gap, misread question, arithmetic, or formula misapplied. Reviewing it after two weeks almost always shows one category dominating.
Fixing that one category is worth more than any amount of general revision, because it addresses what is actually costing marks rather than what feels most uncomfortable.
The last month
- Shift from learning new material to solving full papers under timed conditions.
- Do at least some papers at the actual exam time of day, so the routine is familiar.
- Revise the error log rather than the textbook.
- Keep one light pass over descriptive chapters, which decay fastest.
- Do not start a new reference book. The cost of reorienting outweighs anything gained.
Frequently asked questions
How long should a revision session be?
Long enough to engage properly and short enough to stay attentive — for most students somewhere between forty and sixty minutes, with a genuine break. Longer sessions produce diminishing returns quickly.
Are handwritten notes better than typed?
For chemistry, generally yes, because structures, mechanisms and equations are far quicker to draw than to type. The constraint of writing also forces summarising rather than transcribing.
Should I make notes or use a book?
Make notes, but as summaries in your own words rather than copies. Copying is transcription, not learning, and it consumes time that retrieval practice would use better.
How do I revise a chapter I find impossible?
Break it into the smallest pieces that make sense alone and master those individually. A chapter feels impossible when it is approached whole; almost none is impossible in pieces.
